Some massages require the client to remove clothing.  While the client may feel a bit self-conscious around you if they have some excess weight, what about therapist who aren’t in the best shape?  If you are overweight, would it serve you better to lose weight first, before attending massage therapy school?  Or, maybe you believe that how the therapist looks should have no bearing on massage skills.  You might be wondering if being overweight will cause potential clients to look elsewhere for service.

Performing a service that is intimately related to the body can make you feel like people will be looking at you.   When you’re in massage school, you will practice different massage techniques on your classmates.  It’s not uncommon to feel a bit self-conscious when there is the possibility that you may have to remove some clothing for some of the massages.  Each school will have their own way for handling disrobing.  Chances are, you will be able to go behind a curtain to remove your clothing and come back covered with a sheet before getting on the table.

Some students feel bad knowing that their classmates have to practice on them.  However, you shouldn’t feel bad about your classmates working on you if you are carrying excess weight.  Not to make you sound like a guinea pig but, this is the real world and you are going to need to learn how to work on people of all body types.  It is important that as students, and professionals in the industry, you learn to have respect for yourself and others.  Going through this experience may help you to develop increased self confidence.  You’ll come to find that many people in this industry, instructors and classmates alike, are extremely respectful.

And, while you may think that your “fitter” classmates are looking at you or judging your weight, they probably aren’t as secure as you may think.  No one has the perfect body.  This statement applies to both therapists and clients.  This is why it’s important to learn how to work on people of different and varying body types.

Your weight will more than likely not affect your ability to attract business.  If you perform great work, your clients will spread the word and advertise on your behalf.  It’s not about how you look.  It’s about you make your clients feel.

Now, if you do decide to lose weight, do it for the right reasons: your overall health.  We want you to be around for as long as possible so that you can make awesome contributions to the massage and bodywork industry!
