Massage therapists are medical professionals who treat patients by using touch to manipulate soft-tissue muscles of the body.  The job outlook for a career as a massage therapist is extremely bright, with employment expected to grow by 20 percent from 2010 to 2020.

Massage therapists can work in a range of settings, to include spas, doctor’s offices, or merely for themselves (self-employed).  Potential employment also exists on cruise ships and with sports teams.  Regardless of where your masseuse career takes you, there will always be a demand for highly skilled medical professionals in the bodywork field.  Keep in mind that while all States require massage therapists to be licensed, those training requirements and regulations vary from State to State in the United States, as well as country to country.

Massage Therapist Job Description

The job description of a massage therapist can vary depending upon the type of massage therapy you specialize in (modality), and the location of that job.

At a bare minimum, massage therapists perform the following:

  • Manipulate muscles or other soft tissues of the body
  • Help to improve posture, stretching, strengthening, and overall relaxation
  • Locate painful or tense areas of the body
  • Treat injuries
